Millions Gather in Karbala for Funeral Procession of Iran's Late Supreme Leader

Millions of mourners gathered in the Iraqi holy city of Karbala on Wednesday for the funeral procession of Iran's late Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, following a large public farewell held earlier in Najaf.

According to organizers, large crowds lined the streets as the funeral convoy arrived in Karbala after leaving Najaf, where another massive ceremony had taken place. Iraqi authorities declared a public holiday to facilitate the events and manage the expected turnout.

The procession included visits to the shrines of Imam Hussein and Hazrat Abbas, two of Shia Islam's most revered figures, before the body was scheduled to return to Iran.

Officials and participants described the ceremonies as a symbol of the close religious and political ties between Iraq and Iran. Many mourners traveled from different parts of Iraq and neighboring countries to attend the funeral events.

The final burial ceremony is expected to take place in Mashhad, northeastern Iran, where Ayatollah Khamenei will be laid to rest at the shrine of Imam Reza.

The funeral ceremonies come amid heightened regional tensions following recent military confrontations involving Iran, the United States, and Israel.
