The Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC) says it has unlocked more than ₦100 billion in previously unclaimed matching grants for states and the Federal Capital Territory to strengthen basic education across Nigeria.
UBEC Executive Secretary Aisha Garba announced the development during a media briefing in Abuja on Thursday, describing it as a major milestone in the Federal Government's efforts to improve access to quality education.
According to Garba, the recovered funds are now being invested in classroom construction, school renovations, teacher training, digital learning, and other projects aimed at improving learning outcomes nationwide.
She revealed that UBEC, in collaboration with State Universal Basic Education Boards, has supported the construction of over 4,600 classrooms, renovated more than 6,100 classrooms, built 2,780 toilets, drilled 678 boreholes, and supplied over 334,000 pieces of school furniture.
Garba also disclosed that the commission has established more than 2,300 Early Childhood Care Development and Education Centres to strengthen foundational learning for young children.
On teacher development, she said UBEC has invested over ₦20.4 billion in professional training to improve classroom teaching, school leadership, and accountability.
The commission is also expanding Digital Literacy Centres, promoting artificial intelligence, coding, robotics, and strengthening Smart Schools to equip pupils with skills needed for the digital economy.
Garba added that more than 7.8 million instructional materials have been distributed to schools across the country to improve literacy and numeracy.
She reaffirmed UBEC's commitment to expanding access to education through Open Schooling, Integrated Qur'anic and Tsangaya Education, girl-child education, and inclusive education programmes while enhancing transparency, project monitoring, and partnerships with stakeholders.
The UBEC boss urged journalists to continue supporting education reforms through accurate and balanced reporting, noting that quality education remains essential to Nigeria's national development.
