Uba Sani Launches Free Distribution of 500 Trucks of Fertiliser to 150,000 Kaduna Farmers.

Kaduna State Governor, Uba Sani, has launched the distribution of 500 trucks of free fertiliser and deployed tractors to support 150,000 smallholder farmers across the state's 23 local government areas.

The programme, unveiled at Murtala Mohammed Square in Kaduna, marks the third consecutive year of the state's free fertiliser initiative aimed at boosting agricultural production and improving food security.

Governor Sani said the intervention is intended to ease the burden of rising farming costs and ensure that smallholder farmers have access to essential inputs ahead of the farming season. He explained that although there were suggestions to sell the fertiliser at subsidised prices, the government opted for free distribution to ensure the poorest farmers benefit directly and to prevent profiteering by middlemen.

According to the governor, agriculture now contributes about 43 percent of Kaduna State's Gross Domestic Product (GDP) and provides employment for between 60 and 80 percent of the state's workforce. He added that improved security has enabled thousands of farmers to return to their farmlands, with about 5,000 hectares of previously abandoned farmland reclaimed for cultivation.

Sani also highlighted the state's increased investment in agriculture, noting that the sector's budget has grown from ₦1.48 billion before his administration to more than ₦100 billion in the 2026 budget, exceeding the 10 percent target set under the Malabo Declaration.

Beyond fertiliser distribution, the governor said the administration is investing in improved seeds, mechanisation, irrigation, agricultural insurance, rural roads, extension services, livestock development, and market access. He revealed that over 100,000 farmers have been enrolled in agricultural insurance schemes to protect them against risks such as floods, drought, and pest infestations.

He further disclosed that Kaduna is implementing the Special Agro-Industrial Processing Zone (SAPZ) in collaboration with the Federal Government and the African Development Bank to strengthen agricultural processing and improve the competitiveness of the state's farm produce in regional and international markets.
