United States President Donald Trump has called on British Prime Minister Andy Burnham to take stronger action against illegal migration, warning that the issue is becoming a serious challenge for the United Kingdom.
Speaking with GB News on Wednesday, Trump said Burnham would eventually have to confront the immigration issue despite initially avoiding it after assuming office.
"He's going to have to deal with it because it's hurting your country," Trump said. He added that migrants were arriving from Africa, South America, and parts of Asia, describing the situation as an "invasion" affecting several European countries.
Trump's comments came shortly after reports that more than 500 migrants crossed the English Channel into Britain in a single day. According to GB News, people smugglers launched 11 small boats from the French and Belgian coasts, carrying migrants toward the UK.
The issue has also placed Burnham's government under pressure as it continues to face questions about its plans for handling asylum seekers and reducing the use of hotels for migrant accommodation.
Home Office figures cited by the report showed that 172 people crossed the Channel on Burnham's first Wednesday in office, followed by 366 migrants on Thursday and another 103 on Friday.
Trump also reflected on his early conversations with Burnham, describing their recent phone call as positive and wishing the new prime minister "good luck and Godspeed."
While relations between the two leaders have remained stable, differences may emerge over energy policy. Before Burnham entered office, Trump urged him to expand North Sea oil drilling, arguing that it could significantly strengthen the UK's economy.
The report also noted that some officials in Washington expressed concern over Burnham's appointment of Ed Miliband as Foreign Secretary because of his previous criticism of Trump.
Despite these differences, both governments are continuing efforts to strengthen UK-US relations, with Britain maintaining its policy of allowing US forces to use British military bases for operations described by the government as defensive actions linked to the conflict involving Iran.
