Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa has announced a major reshuffle of the country's security and intelligence leadership in a move aimed at strengthening national security and supporting reconstruction efforts.
Under the changes, Interior Minister Anas Khattab has been appointed as the new head of the National Security Bureau, while retaining his role as interior minister. The bureau oversees Syria's various security agencies, giving Khattab broader authority over the country's security apparatus.
Other key appointments include Hussein al-Salamah as deputy head of the National Security Bureau, Mulham al-Shantout as assistant interior minister for security affairs, and Abdul Qader Tahan as the new head of the General Intelligence Service.
The Syrian government said the restructuring is intended to improve coordination among security agencies, enhance stability, and remove obstacles to rebuilding the country after years of conflict.
The shake-up comes amid recent security challenges, including deadly bomb attacks in Damascus earlier this month. Syrian authorities said they have arrested members of an ISIL-linked cell suspected of carrying out the attacks.
The reforms also follow recent diplomatic developments, including French President Emmanuel Macron's visit to Damascus and a meeting between President al-Sharaa and U.S. President Donald Trump during the NATO summit in Türkiye. Shortly afterward, Washington announced it would remove Syria from its list of state sponsors of terrorism.
Officials say the latest changes are part of the government's broader effort to centralize security institutions and promote long-term stability and reconstruction.
