Senegal's President Bassirou Faye Elected New ECOWAS Chairman

Senegal's President, Bassirou Diomaye Faye, has been elected as the new Chairman of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), succeeding Sierra Leone's President Julius Maada Bio.

The election took place on Sunday during the 69th Ordinary Session of the ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and Government held in Freetown, Sierra Leone.

Faye takes over the leadership of the regional bloc at a critical time, as ECOWAS continues to address growing security challenges, democratic instability, and the withdrawal of Mali, Burkina Faso, and Niger from the organization.

The 46-year-old Senegalese leader is expected to prioritize regional peace, strengthen cooperation among member states, and work towards rebuilding dialogue with the three breakaway countries. His leadership is also expected to advance reforms focused on good governance, accountability, youth participation, and institutional credibility.

During the summit, Biram Diop was also appointed as the new President of the ECOWAS Commission, replacing Dr. Omar Touray.

Faye's appointment places Senegal at the forefront of major political and diplomatic efforts aimed at promoting stability and regional integration across West Africa.
