A South Korean court has sentenced former President Yoon Suk Yeol to 18 months in prison, suspended for three years, after finding him guilty of making false statements during the 2022 presidential election campaign.
The Seoul Central District Court ruled that Yoon misled voters by denying that he introduced a lawyer to a former tax official and by claiming that neither he nor his wife, former First Lady Kim Keon Hee, had ties to shaman Jeon Seong-bae. Prosecutors argued that both claims were false and influenced public opinion during the election.
The court said false information shared by presidential candidates during debates and public interviews can significantly affect voters' decisions, making the offense a serious violation of election law.
If the conviction is upheld on appeal, Yoon's People Power Party could be required to repay 39.7 billion won (about $27.1 million) in campaign expenses that were reimbursed by South Korea's National Election Commission after his election victory.
Prosecutors had sought a two-year prison sentence. However, Yoon received a suspended sentence and has announced plans to appeal the verdict, maintaining that he committed no wrongdoing.
The former president is also facing separate criminal proceedings, including an insurrection case linked to his declaration of martial law in December 2024. Earlier this year, a lower court sentenced him to life imprisonment in that case, which is also under appeal.
