At least six people, including five children, were killed on Sunday after several residential buildings collapsed in Mumbai's eastern suburb of Mankhurd following days of heavy rainfall.
According to local authorities, two to three multi-storey houses in a slum area gave way during the downpour, killing five children and one woman. Rescue teams responded to the scene as heavy rain continued across the city.
The relentless rainfall also triggered landslides along the Mumbai–Pune Expressway, forcing its temporary closure and causing major traffic disruptions between the two cities.
Air travel and railway services were also affected, with several flights delayed and long-distance train services, including routes between Mumbai and Pune, cancelled. Schools and colleges across Mumbai were closed on Monday as authorities warned residents to remain cautious.
Television footage showed flooded streets, collapsed debris, and residents wading through waist-deep water in several neighbourhoods.
Heavy rains have also caused trees to fall across the city, with local media reporting that at least three people have died in similar incidents since late June.
Mumbai, India's financial capital, recorded more than 100 millimetres of rainfall in 24 hours, while some areas received up to 161 millimetres.
India's Meteorological Department has forecast more light to moderate rainfall in parts of the region, urging residents to stay alert as the monsoon continues.
