China and Russia will begin their annual joint naval exercises on Monday in the waters and airspace off the eastern Chinese port city of Qingdao, according to China's Ministry of Defence.
The military drills, scheduled to run until July 13, will include joint maritime patrols in parts of the Pacific Ocean after the exercises conclude.
Russia's Pacific Fleet has deployed a cruiser, a corvette, a diesel-electric submarine and a rescue vessel for the operation. China will contribute two destroyers, a frigate, a submarine, a supply ship and a rescue vessel.
The two navies are expected to conduct reconnaissance missions, air and missile defence drills, and surface strike exercises to strengthen operational cooperation.
The exercises come about two months after Russian President Vladimir Putin visited China, where he and Chinese President Xi Jinping reaffirmed their countries' close strategic partnership.
China and Russia have held the Joint Sea naval exercises annually since 2012. Last year's drills were held near the Russian port of Vladivostok and were followed by joint patrols in the Pacific Ocean.
Although China has not condemned Russia's war in Ukraine, Beijing maintains that it is a neutral party and continues to call for a peaceful resolution to the conflict.
