INEC Extends Voter Registration Deadline by Two Weeks

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has extended the nationwide Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) exercise by two weeks, giving more eligible Nigerians additional time to register and obtain their Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) ahead of the 2027 general elections.

INEC spokesperson Zainab Aminu Abubakar said the registration exercise, which began in phases in August 2025, was originally scheduled to end on July 10, 2026. However, the commission approved the extension following appeals from political parties, civil society organisations and members of the public.

The new deadline for voter registration is now July 26, 2026.

Abubakar urged eligible citizens, particularly those who recently turned 18, to take advantage of the extension, warning that anyone who misses the deadline will not be able to register until after the 2027 general elections.

She also highlighted improvements to the registration process, explaining that applicants can now complete most of the registration online using a mobile phone or computer, including uploading a facial photograph, before completing any remaining requirements.

INEC noted that the registration exercise is open to first-time voters aged 18 and above, citizens who missed previous registration exercises, and those seeking to replace lost or damaged voter cards or update their registration details.

The commission emphasized that the Permanent Voter Card (PVC) remains essential for participating in elections and also serves as a valid means of identification in some institutions, including banks.
