Thousands of mourners lined the streets of Tehran on Monday as the funeral procession for Iran's slain Supreme Leader, Ali Khamenei, got underway following two days of public mourning.
Khamenei, who was killed alongside four members of his family in air strikes on his office in Tehran on February 28 during the United States-Israel war on Iran, had been lying in state at Tehran's Grand Mosalla religious complex before the procession began.
State media reported that large crowds accompanied the coffin through the Iranian capital, with authorities implementing extensive security measures to prevent a repeat of the deadly crowd crush that occurred during the 1989 funeral of former Supreme Leader Ruhollah Khomeini.
The funeral ceremonies will continue in the religious city of Qom on Tuesday, followed by commemorations in Iraq's holy cities of Najaf and Karbala on Wednesday. Khamenei is scheduled to be buried in his hometown of Mashhad on Thursday.
Thousands of Iranians gathered along the procession route carrying portraits of the late leader, while security personnel were deployed across key locations in Tehran to manage the crowds.
