French President is set to become the first Western European leader to visit post-Assad , marking a significant step in rebuilding relations between the two countries.
According to the Syrian presidency, Macron will travel to Damascus with a delegation of French business leaders and investors to discuss strengthening bilateral ties, economic cooperation, reconstruction efforts, and regional security. The date of the visit has not yet been announced.
The trip follows Macron's decision to host Syrian President in Paris last year after Sharaa assumed power following the overthrow of former President in late 2024.
If the visit takes place, Macron will become the first leader of a European Union member state to visit Damascus since Assad's removal from power. The last French president to visit Syria was in 2009.
The visit comes as Syria continues efforts to rebuild after more than a decade of civil war while addressing ongoing security challenges, including recent attacks in Damascus. Discussions are expected to focus on counterterrorism, the fight against the Islamic State group, the protection of minority communities, and opportunities for French participation in Syria's reconstruction.
France has been among the leading Western supporters of Syria's diplomatic reintegration following the easing of sanctions imposed during the Assad era. Analysts say Macron's visit is expected to strengthen France's political and economic influence in the country as Syria continues its return to the international stage.
