At least seven people have been killed and several others abducted after heavily armed bandits attacked Tsamaye village in Sabon Birni Local Government Area of Sokoto State.
The attack, which began around 8:30 p.m. on Tuesday, lasted for more than six hours, with the assailants reportedly leaving the community at about 3:00 a.m. on Wednesday.
According to residents, the bandits first surrounded security personnel stationed in the village, preventing them from responding, before moving from house to house. The attackers looted valuables, rustled livestock, abducted residents, and set a vehicle and two shops on fire.
Three of the victims were reportedly killed inside a mosque during the attack. Residents later recovered a total of seven bodies, including two indigenes of Tsamaye and five displaced persons who had sought refuge in the village after fleeing previous bandit attacks.
The exact number of abducted residents remains unclear, as many villagers escaped into nearby bushes during the assault. However, locals confirmed that at least three people were kidnapped after relatives contacted their phone numbers and the bandits answered, confirming the victims were in their custody.
A resident praised the efforts of security personnel, saying they were caught off guard after being surrounded by the attackers, making it impossible for them to respond to distress calls.
The spokesperson for the Sokoto State Police Command, DSP Ahmad Rufai, confirmed that the police were aware of the incident but said full details were still being compiled.
