Seven Die as Buruli Ulcer Outbreak Hits Niger Community

At least seven people have died following an outbreak of Buruli ulcer in parts of Munya Local Government Area of Niger State.

The lawmaker representing Munya Constituency in the Niger State House of Assembly, Dogari Mathew Daje, disclosed the development during the 2026 Annual Stakeholders' Flood Sensitisation and Awareness Forum organised by the North South Power Company Limited in Minna.

According to Daje, the outbreak began about six months ago and has affected communities in Guni, Kuchi, Gini and parts of Sarkin-Pawa wards. He said the disease initially claimed three lives, but the death toll has now increased to seven, with several residents still receiving treatment at home.

The lawmaker said he had repeatedly alerted relevant government ministries and agencies, urging them to isolate infected persons and intensify efforts to contain the disease.

Reacting to the situation, Niger State Commissioner for Health, Dr. Murtala Bagana, confirmed that the ministry has begun measures to isolate affected patients and prevent further spread of the disease.

Also speaking, the Director of Public Health in the Ministry of Health, Dr. Ibrahim Idris, said emergency response measures have been activated. He revealed that a modern isolation centre has been completed at the Dr. Ibrahim Idris Kuta Primary Healthcare Centre in Minna to manage infectious disease outbreaks across the state.

Health officials said the state is equipped to respond to the outbreak and stressed that isolating infected patients remains a key strategy for preventing further transmission.
