Senegalese President Bassirou Diomaye Faye has officially launched a new political party, deepening the split within the country's ruling camp after his fallout with former Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko.
The new party, Kiiraay – Republican Patriots, was unveiled at a gathering in Dakar on Saturday. Speaking at the event, Faye described the movement as "the majority party in this country." The name Kiiraay means "shield" in the Wolof language.
Faye and Sonko, once close allies who led Senegal's anti-establishment movement to a landslide victory in the 2024 elections, have been locked in a power struggle for several months.
The political divide widened after President Faye dismissed Sonko as prime minister in May. Sonko later became Speaker of the National Assembly and continues to lead the ruling Pastef party, which still commands a strong majority in parliament.
The growing rivalry comes as Senegal faces mounting economic challenges, including a debt crisis triggered by the discovery that the previous administration had misreported the country's public debt.
The formation of Faye's new party is expected to reshape Senegal's political landscape and could influence the balance of power within the government in the months ahead.
