Search Continues for 23 Missing After Vietnamese Ship Sinks in South China Sea.

Rescue teams are continuing a major search operation in the South China Sea after a Vietnamese cargo ship sank, leaving 23 people missing.

According to Chinese authorities, the vessel, Khoi Nguyen 18, encountered distress near Fiery Cross Reef in the disputed Spratly Islands on Saturday. The ship was carrying 62 Vietnamese nationals when it went down.

A Chinese rescue vessel first spotted the ship's distress flare before launching emergency operations. So far, 39 people have been rescued, while search efforts continue for the remaining 23 missing crew members.

The rescue mission involves six Chinese vessels, a rescue helicopter, and a Vietnamese rescue ship working together to locate the missing sailors.

The Khoi Nguyen 18 is a Vietnamese-registered cargo vessel measuring nearly 70 meters (230 feet) in length with a gross tonnage of 999 tons.

The incident occurred near the Spratly Islands, a strategically important and resource-rich area claimed by China, Vietnam, the Philippines, Taiwan, Malaysia, and Brunei. The overlapping territorial claims have made the region one of the world's most disputed maritime areas.

Authorities have not yet determined what caused the vessel to sink, and rescue operations remain ongoing.
