Thousands of workers in Samsung Electronics' smartphone, television and home appliance division are set to stage a rally on July 16 to protest what they describe as unfair differences in bonuses compared with employees in the company's semiconductor business.
According to union officials, workers in the consumer electronics division are expected to receive 6 million won (about $3,900) in treasury shares as their 2026 bonus, while some employees in the semiconductor division secured bonuses of up to 600 million won after reaching a separate wage agreement.
The demonstration, expected to attract between 2,000 and 3,000 workers, will take place near Samsung's headquarters in Suwon, South Korea. The union representing the mobile and consumer electronics division says it has around 28,000 members.
The protest comes as Samsung prepares to announce its second-quarter earnings, with analysts forecasting a sharp increase in operating profit, driven largely by strong demand for its artificial intelligence memory chips.
The growing gap in compensation between Samsung's booming chip business and its other divisions has fueled dissatisfaction among workers outside the semiconductor unit, prompting calls for fairer reward policies across the company.
