A powerful rainstorm has destroyed more than 20 houses and several farmlands in Nghassi community, Mandar Ward of Bokkos Local Government Area, Plateau State, leaving many residents homeless and in urgent need of assistance.
The storm, which struck around 5:00 p.m. on Tuesday, tore off rooftops, uprooted trees, damaged buildings, and destroyed property worth millions of naira.
Resident Bulus Ritji said the heavy rainfall was accompanied by strong winds that caused widespread destruction across the community.
> "More than 20 houses were affected, and many families have been displaced. Although no lives were lost, victims lost their homes, food supplies, clothing, and other valuables," he said.
Ritji added that the storm also destroyed farmlands and other sources of livelihood, forcing many affected families to seek temporary shelter with neighbours and relatives.
The Youth Leader of Bokkos LGA, Christopher Luka, described the incident as tragic and appealed to the Plateau State Government, the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), the Plateau State Emergency Management Agency (PLASEMA), humanitarian organisations, and well-meaning Nigerians to provide urgent relief materials, temporary shelter, and other support for the displaced families.
Meanwhile, the Executive Secretary of PLASEMA, Sunday Abdu, said the agency had not yet received an official report of the incident but promised to investigate.
The latest disaster comes a year after a windstorm destroyed more than 70 houses and barns in several communities in Langtang South Local Government Area of Plateau State.
