opposition leader Rahul Gandhi has been released after being detained during a protest in New Delhi, where he joined students demanding reforms to India's education system.
The demonstrations, led mainly by students and the social media-driven Cockroach Janta Party (CJP), have become one of the biggest political challenges facing Prime Minister Narendra Modi's government.
Protesters are calling for the resignation of Prime Minister Modi and Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan following allegations that medical entrance examination papers were leaked. The scandal forced more than two million students to retake their exams and has been linked to at least 12 student suicides.
Gandhi and several opposition leaders were detained on Tuesday while staging a sit-in outside the Prime Minister's residence, accusing the government of ignoring students' demands and using excessive force against peaceful demonstrators. They were later released.
Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan defended the government's response, accusing Gandhi of exploiting students for political gain. He said the government remains committed to delivering reforms, accountability, and solutions to address concerns over the examination system.
The protests have spread to major cities, including Mumbai and Bengaluru. On Monday, police used tear gas and batons to disperse demonstrators marching toward Parliament. Authorities reported injuries among both police officers and protesters.
Despite the crackdown, hundreds of demonstrators remain gathered at New Delhi's Jantar Mantar protest site, with organizers vowing to continue nationwide protests until their demands are met.
The movement has also gained support from activist Sonam Wangchuk, whose hunger strike over alleged examination irregularities has drawn widespread public attention after a court ordered his transfer to a private hospital.
