Poland has formally requested that the United States extradite former Justice Minister Zbigniew Ziobro, who is facing 26 criminal charges linked to the alleged misuse of a fund meant for crime victims.
According to Polish prosecutors, the extradition request was sent through diplomatic channels on Monday as authorities seek to bring Ziobro back to face trial. The charges mainly accuse him of diverting money from the victims' fund for political purposes.
Ziobro, a leading member of the conservative Law and Justice (PiS) party, has strongly denied all allegations, insisting the case is politically motivated. He claims Prime Minister Donald Tusk's pro-European Union government is targeting him because of his previous investigations into individuals close to the current administration.
The former minister fled to the United States in May after Hungary's new government signaled it would revoke the asylum previously granted to him and his former deputy, Marcin Romanowski. While Ziobro is believed to be in the U.S., Romanowski's current whereabouts remain unknown.
Ziobro played a key role in reshaping Poland's judicial system during the PiS government's tenure between 2015 and 2023, reforms that the European Union said weakened judicial independence and the rule of law.
Despite the extradition request, Ziobro has expressed confidence that he will not be returned to Poland, maintaining that the charges against him are without merit.
