Former Anambra State Governor and Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has donated ₦10 million to St. Raphael's Hospital in Umueri, Anambra State, as part of activities marking his 65th birthday.
Obi announced the donation on Sunday after attending a thanksgiving Mass in Onitsha and visiting the rural hospital in Anambra East Local Government Area. He said birthdays should be used to serve humanity rather than for lavish celebrations.
According to Obi, the donation is intended to support the hospital's efforts to provide quality healthcare, particularly for patients who cannot afford medical bills.
He described hospitals and schools as two of the most important investments any society can make, noting that hospitals save lives while schools prepare future generations.
Obi also revealed that he plans to spend the remainder of the month visiting hospitals and schools across the country, where he will make similar donations as an expression of gratitude to God.
Reflecting on Nigeria's current economic and social challenges, Obi urged leaders and citizens to prioritize compassion and public service over personal celebrations. He said many Nigerians continue to face poverty, unemployment, poor healthcare, and limited opportunities despite the country's abundant resources.
The former governor added that throughout his years in public service, he has consistently discouraged expensive birthday gifts, encouraging friends and supporters instead to fund projects that benefit the less privileged.
Obi said reaching the age of 65 has strengthened his belief that the true measure of a person's life is the positive impact they make on others.
