The detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, has officially ended the services of his longtime personal lawyer, Barrister Ifeanyi Ejiofor, directing him to immediately stop representing him, his family, or the IPOB organization.
In a letter dated July 22, 2026, reportedly written from the Sokoto Correctional Centre, Kanu said Ejiofor's appointment had previously been terminated verbally, adding that the latest letter served as formal written confirmation of the decision.
Kanu also withdrew any authority previously granted to Ejiofor to act or speak on behalf of IPOB. He maintained that the lawyer no longer has any legal or organizational mandate to represent the group in any capacity.
Referring to the IPOB Code of Conduct, Kanu stated that only the IPOB leader has the authority to appoint, suspend, or dismiss principal officers unless such powers are specifically delegated. He insisted that any claim by Ejiofor to continue representing IPOB is no longer recognized.
The IPOB leader instructed Ejiofor to stop issuing public statements, granting interviews, publishing press releases, or making social media posts on behalf of him, his family, or IPOB. He also directed the lawyer to withdraw from any pending legal matters where he remains counsel representing him or the organization.
Kanu further warned Ejiofor against disclosing or using any confidential or privileged information obtained during the course of his legal representation without his written approval or a court order. He said any unauthorized disclosure could amount to professional misconduct and may result in disciplinary action before the Legal Practitioners Disciplinary Committee (LPDC), as well as other legal consequences.
