French authorities say a massive wildfire that forced about 220,000 people to evacuate communities around Bordeaux has stopped spreading, offering hope after days of intense firefighting.
Interior Minister Laurent Nunez said the blaze remained stable overnight but warned that firefighters must stay vigilant as hot weather expected this week could reignite the flames.
The wildfire has burned an area estimated to be four times the size of Paris, making it one of France's most destructive fires in recent years. Thousands of firefighters, supported by water-dropping aircraft, continue working to extinguish remaining hotspots.
French President Emmanuel Macron held an emergency meeting to assess the situation and coordinate the ongoing response to wildfires across the country.
Authorities have not ordered any new evacuations, but they are urging tourists to avoid the affected region ahead of the busy August holiday season. Holiday camps for children and people with disabilities have also been suspended in parts of the Gironde region.
Weather forecasters expect temperatures to rise above 35°C (95°F) in southwestern France, raising concerns that the dangerous conditions could hamper firefighting efforts and increase the risk of fresh outbreaks.
