Nine Killed in Fresh Terrorist Attacks on Niger Communities

At least nine people have been killed and two vigilantes injured in a series of terrorist attacks across communities in Borgu Local Government Area of Niger State between Thursday and Saturday.

The violence began on Thursday when an improvised explosive device (IED) detonated along the Dakera–Babanna Road after a truck reportedly drove over it, killing four occupants instantly. Residents said the victims were believed to be local hunters, popularly known as "Boko boys."

On Friday, suspected terrorists attacked Kpenya and Dekara communities, killing three residents. The victims were identified as Mallam Yusuf Na Allah, a former principal of Government Day Secondary School (GDSS), Dekara; Alhaji Zakari Abubakar, the Gbaoki of Kpenya; and Mallam Sani.

The attacks continued on Saturday evening when gunmen suspected to be Boko Haram militants ambushed farmers returning from their fields along the Pissa Road in Gbeswa Ward. Two farmers were killed during the attack, while two vigilantes sustained gunshot wounds after confronting the assailants.

According to residents, local vigilantes from Zongonji engaged the attackers in a gun battle between Pissa and Bakaranbani, forcing the terrorists to retreat toward the Sabidogo axis.

The renewed violence has sparked fear among residents of Pissa and nearby communities, with many families reportedly fleeing their homes. Locals also said movement along rural roads has become increasingly dangerous due to the threat of further attacks, kidnappings, and destruction of property.

The spokesperson for the Niger State Police Command, SP Wasiu Abiodun, said the command was verifying the reported incidents and would provide an official update after completing its investigation.
