About 30 Malian soldiers have been killed and around 60 others injured during an operation to recapture the northern town of Anefis from rebel forces, according to Mali's army chief, General Jean Elysee Dao.
The military said it regained control of Anefis on Friday after nearly a week of intense fighting. The town, located about 100 kilometres from the rebel-held city of Kidal, had been seized on July 4 by Tuareg separatists and fighters linked to al-Qaeda during coordinated attacks on military positions across the country.
General Dao described the fallen troops as "martyrs" and confirmed that several of the wounded remain in critical condition.
Meanwhile, the Tuareg-led Azawad Liberation Front (FLA) acknowledged losing several of its fighters during the battle but claimed it inflicted heavy casualties and equipment losses on Malian forces and their allied Russian paramilitary fighters.
Mali has faced a prolonged security crisis for more than a decade, with armed groups continuing to battle government forces across large parts of the country. The al-Qaeda-linked Jama’at Nusrat al-Islam wal-Muslimin (JNIM) controls significant rural areas, while the FLA is seeking independence for northern Mali.
The latest fighting highlights the continuing instability in northern Mali despite ongoing military operations to regain control of key territories.
