A 23-year-old Nigerian medical graduate, Nnani Adaobi Marian, has died from injuries sustained in a Russian airstrike in Kharkiv, Ukraine, just days before her graduation ceremony.
Adaobi, a student of Kharkiv National Medical University, was critically injured on June 29, 2026, when Russian forces launched an aerial bomb attack on the Kholodnohirskyi district of Kharkiv.
She was initially treated in Kharkiv before being transferred to Germany for specialized medical care. Despite efforts by doctors in both countries, she died on July 5, 2026.
In a statement, Kharkiv National Medical University described Adaobi as a bright, hardworking and compassionate student who was passionate about helping others.
The university said the entire academic community had hoped for her recovery but was devastated by her death.
According to Ukrainian authorities, Adaobi and her friend, Fatima Huseynova, were on their way to a graduation photoshoot when the airstrike occurred. Fatima was killed at the scene, while Adaobi suffered life-threatening injuries.
The attack also left 12 other people injured.
Adaobi had been studying medicine at Kharkiv National Medical University since 2020 and had completed internships at the University of Cambridge and Biruni University in Türkiye. Her death has drawn condolences from the university, Ukrainian officials, and members of the Nigerian community.
