India's National Investigation Agency (NIA) has filed terrorism charges against Hafiz Saeed, the founder of Pakistan-based militant group Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT), over the deadly attack on tourists in Indian-administered Kashmir that killed 26 people and sparked a military confrontation between India and Pakistan.
The agency said the charges detail Saeed's alleged role in planning the attack, describe what it calls Pakistan's involvement, and include evidence gathered during its investigation. Saeed has been charged both personally and as the leader of Lashkar-e-Taiba and its affiliate, The Resistance Front (TRF).
India has long accused Pakistan-backed militants of carrying out the attack, an allegation Islamabad denies while calling for an independent investigation. Pakistani authorities had not commented on the latest charges at the time of reporting.
Saeed, who is also accused of masterminding the 2008 Mumbai attacks, has been serving a prison sentence in Pakistan since 2020 after being convicted on terrorism financing charges.
