Africans Turn to Starlink as Poor Internet Drives Demand

More Africans are increasingly adopting Starlink, the satellite internet service operated by SpaceX, as they seek reliable internet connections amid persistent network challenges across the continent.

According to The Economist, unreliable mobile networks and the high cost of extending fibre-optic infrastructure have pushed governments, businesses and wealthier households to embrace satellite internet as an alternative.

In Nigeria's Ekiti State, officials say poor connectivity has slowed economic development, particularly because the state's hilly terrain makes it difficult and expensive to expand traditional broadband infrastructure. The state government has improved its internet access by adopting Starlink.

Although Starlink remains relatively expensive for many households, analysts believe it could play a key role in expanding internet access across Africa while encouraging conventional broadband providers to improve their services and compete more effectively.
