The Federal Government has begun constructing a 1.6-megawatt peak (MWp) solar mini-grid with 1.5MWh battery storage at the Federal University of Technology, Ilaro in Ogun State to improve electricity supply for teaching, research, and innovation.
The project, funded by the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund), is expected to provide reliable power as the institution transitions into a university of technology, while reducing its dependence on the national electricity grid.
According to the university's spokesperson, Olusola Abiala, the solar facility will occupy about three acres of land and support academic activities, research, and technological innovation.
During the project's launch, Acting Vice-Chancellor, Mukail Akinde, described uninterrupted electricity as essential for technological advancement, noting that quality research and student innovation require a stable power supply.
He thanked Bola Tinubu, TETFund Executive Secretary Sonny Echono, and other stakeholders for supporting the initiative.
In a related development, the university also commissioned a new police post to strengthen security on campus and in the surrounding community. The facility was inaugurated on behalf of the Kehinde Olugbenle, while the university management reaffirmed its commitment to protecting lives and property within the institution.
