New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani says his administration is consulting legal experts to determine whether Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu could be arrested if he visits New York for the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in September.
In an interview published by The New York Times on Saturday, Mamdani reiterated that he believes Netanyahu should face justice over Israel's military actions in Gaza. Netanyahu is the subject of an International Criminal Court (ICC) arrest warrant over alleged crimes against humanity, allegations that Israel rejects.
Mamdani, who campaigned on a promise to seek Netanyahu's arrest if he visited New York, said his office is now reviewing the legal authority available to the city.
> "Whatever the law allows me to do in New York City, that's what we will do," Mamdani said, adding that his administration would not act outside the law.
Responding to Mamdani's remarks, Netanyahu criticized the mayor in an interview with US radio host Sid Rosenberg, while Israel's Ambassador to the United Nations, Danny Danon, insisted that the Israeli leader will attend the UN General Assembly in New York this September.
Mamdani's stance reflects growing divisions within the Democratic Party over US support for Israel. Recent opinion polls indicate increasing opposition among Democratic voters to continued US military aid to Israel, while several Democratic lawmakers have also backed measures aimed at restricting military assistance.
The debate comes as international scrutiny of the Gaza conflict continues, with differing views among governments, legal experts and human rights organizations over Israel's conduct during the war.
