Leaders of all 32 NATO member countries have convened in Ankara for a two-day summit focused on strengthening the alliance's defence capabilities, increasing military spending, and addressing continued support for Ukraine.
The meeting comes as US President Donald Trump renews calls for NATO allies to shoulder more of the alliance's defence costs. European governments are expected to announce billions of dollars in new defence investments aimed at expanding military capabilities and meeting NATO's spending targets.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy is attending the summit for high-level talks, including a bilateral meeting with President Trump. Zelenskyy is expected to seek additional Patriot air defence systems as Russia intensifies missile and drone attacks on Ukrainian cities.
Leaders from South Korea, along with representatives from Australia, Japan, New Zealand, Bahrain, Kuwait, Qatar, and the United Arab Emirates, are also participating in the summit, highlighting NATO's growing engagement with partners beyond the alliance.
The summit will also address the future of European security as the United States continues to review its military presence across Europe. While analysts expect few immediate policy changes, they say the gathering is intended to demonstrate unity among NATO members despite ongoing disagreements over defence spending and strategic priorities.
The summit concludes on Wednesday with joint discussions on regional security, military cooperation, and the alliance's long-term defence strategy.
