A landslide in China's western Gansu Province has left at least 16 people still trapped after heavy rainfall triggered the disaster on Tuesday. Authorities said 33 people were initially buried, but rescue teams successfully pulled 17 survivors from the debris as emergency operations continue.
Chinese President Xi Jinping has directed rescue agencies to make every effort to save those still missing and provide assistance to affected communities.
The landslide comes as severe thunderstorms continue to wreak havoc across China. In Hubei Province, at least eight people were killed and one remains missing after powerful storms swept through several cities with winds reaching up to 149 km/h. More than 275 people were reported injured.
Weather officials have warned that torrential rainfall is expected to continue across several provinces, increasing the risk of flooding and additional landslides. Meanwhile, authorities are also monitoring the approach of Super Typhoon Bavi, which is moving across the Pacific with winds of up to 290 km/h, raising concerns for Taiwan and nearby regions.
Emergency services remain on high alert as China faces a series of extreme weather events.
