Lagos Begins Demolition of Fire-Damaged Martins Street Building

The Lagos State Government has commenced the controlled demolition of the fire-damaged building located on Martins Street, Lagos Island, following a comprehensive structural assessment that found the structure unsafe.

The Permanent Secretary of the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), Dr. Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, said the demolition is being carried out in accordance with international safety standards to protect lives, property, and public health.

He urged residents, traders, customers, and visitors to comply with all safety directives, stressing that the affected building and its surroundings have been declared a restricted and hazardous zone. Unauthorized access has been prohibited, while commercial activities, including trading, parking, and loading, have been suspended until the area is certified safe.

According to LASEMA, the site has been barricaded with warning signs, and security personnel have been deployed to prevent unauthorized entry and ensure public safety. The demolition contractor will conduct a final structural inspection before work begins and adhere to all established safety regulations.

Emergency responders, including the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, Lagos State Ambulance Service, and first aid teams, will remain on standby throughout the demolition exercise. Other agencies supporting the operation include the Lagos State Building Control Agency, the Nigeria Police Force, the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), and the Lagos State Neighbourhood Safety Corps.

Authorities said dust suppression measures, traffic management plans, and continuous public awareness campaigns will be implemented during the exercise. The government acknowledged the economic importance of Martins Street but emphasized that the demolition is necessary to safeguard lives and restore safety in the area.

Residents were encouraged to cooperate with emergency and security officials and report any safety concerns through LASEMA's emergency toll-free lines, 112 and 767. The government also thanked the Martins Street community for its patience and cooperation as efforts continue to restore normalcy.
