Law officers working with the Kwara State Ministry of Justice have commenced an indefinite strike following the alleged non-payment of outstanding statutory allowances and the state government's failure to harmonise their salaries and conditions of service with those of magistrates.
The industrial action, announced on Monday by the Law Officers Association of Nigeria (LOAN), Kwara State Chapter, takes effect from July 27, 2026.
In a notice signed by the association's Acting Chairman, Kehinde Ayorinde, members were directed to immediately withdraw their services until the state government addresses their demands.
According to Ayorinde, all law officers have been instructed to suspend official duties indefinitely pending a satisfactory response from the government.
The strike follows the expiration of a seven-day ultimatum earlier issued to Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq over unresolved welfare issues.
The association is demanding the payment of outstanding balances of the 2020 furniture allowance, robe allowances for 2024, 2025, and 2026, as well as the implementation of the approved harmonisation of salaries, allowances, and conditions of service for state counsel with those of magistrates.
LOAN said repeated appeals to the governor and the Office of the Head of Service failed to produce meaningful action, despite assurances given after a three-day warning strike in October 2025.
The association stressed that law officers play a vital role in the justice system by prosecuting criminal cases, providing legal advice to government agencies, drafting legislation, and recovering public funds through the prosecution of tax defaulters.
The lawyers maintained that the strike will continue until the Kwara State Government meets their demands.
