Kano Mass Wedding Open to Christians, Muslims — Hisbah

The Kano State Hisbah Board has said its government-sponsored mass wedding programme is open to both Muslims and Christians who meet the required conditions.

Deputy Commander of the board, Sheikh Mujahideen Aminuddeen, disclosed that three Christian couples participated in the last mass wedding held in October 2023. He explained that the initiative, popularly known as "Auren Gata" (Marriage for the Privileged), welcomes widows, widowers, divorcees, bachelors and spinsters from all backgrounds.

According to Aminuddeen, the programme is aimed at strengthening families, reducing immoral behaviour and helping low-income residents who cannot afford marriage expenses. He added that beneficiaries undergo screening and verification before selection.

Residents and experts praised the initiative, saying it has helped vulnerable families, encouraged responsible marriages and could contribute to poverty reduction through empowerment packages provided by the government.

The Commander-General of the Hisbah Board, Sheikh Aminu Daurawa, recently announced that the Kano State Government has set aside ₦1.5 billion for the next mass wedding involving 1,500 couples. Each groom will receive ₦100,000 for dowry, while each bride will receive ₦100,000 as business support, alongside furniture, bedding and food items.

Applicants are also required to undergo medical tests, including HIV, hepatitis B and genotype screening, to ensure healthy and compatible unions.
