The Kano State Judicial Service Commission (JSC) has compulsorily retired a Sharia Court judge, Alkali Aliyu Yahaya Muhammad, after finding him guilty of collecting a ₦250,000 bribe while handling a civil case.
The decision was reached during the Commission's 90th meeting held on July 3, 2026, under the chairmanship of the Chief Judge of Kano State.
According to a statement issued by the Commission's spokesperson, Baba Jibo Ibrahim, the judge, who served at the Sharia Court in Babeji, accepted the gratification during the course of judicial proceedings. In addition to his compulsory retirement, he was ordered to refund the ₦250,000.
The Commission also disciplined Ibrahim Ahmad Ibrahim, a court clerk attached to the same court, after he admitted receiving part of the bribe. He was suspended without pay for four months.
In a separate disciplinary action, the JSC ordered the compulsory retirement of Muzambilu Ado, Acting Director of Information and Statistics at the Sharia Court of Appeal, over irregularities involving his academic qualifications and admission into the Nigerian Law School.
Another judicial officer, Alkali Usman Haruna Usman, Presiding Judge of the Upper Sharia Court in Goron Dutse, was demoted by one grade level for negligence after allowing proceeds from the sale of an estate to be paid into a court official's personal bank account. He was also issued a formal warning, while the Commission upheld its earlier decision removing him from judicial duties.
Similarly, Alkali Abdullahi Wayya of the Upper Sharia Court, Kasuwa, received a warning for failing to properly supervise a bail process that resulted in the wrongful release of a defendant.
The Commission also referred Inspector Shehu Adamu to the Commissioner of Police for investigation over allegations that he misled the court regarding bail conditions. Further investigations were ordered into the roles of court registrars Salmanu Zubairu and Ahmad Kabir in the handling of the bail documents.
Meanwhile, the Commission reviewed the case of Hon. Alkali Umar Sunusi Danbaba (PhD) and reversed its earlier decision removing him from judicial duties after fresh evidence showed that the Judiciary Public Complaints Committee had not recommended his recall. He has now been reinstated with full salary and other entitlements.
The Kano State Judicial Service Commission reaffirmed its commitment to promoting accountability, transparency, and integrity within the state's judiciary.
