Jigawa State Governor Umar Namadi has suspended the ongoing N1.3 billion renovation and remodelling of Gumel General Hospital, citing poor workmanship and the use of substandard materials.
The governor announced the suspension during an unannounced night inspection of the hospital in Gumel Local Government Area on Friday. He expressed disappointment with the quality of work, stating that the project failed to meet the standards and specifications outlined by the state government.
"The work is very poor. What we requested was a complete renovation and remodelling of the hospital where necessary, but what I have seen is far below expectations," Governor Namadi said. "I have directed that the project be suspended immediately."
The contract, awarded to Yasmeen Automobile Nigeria Limited in December last year, was scheduled for completion within eight months.
Governor Namadi stressed that his administration would not tolerate substandard execution of public projects. He said the government would meet with the contractor to address the concerns before any decision is made on the project's future.
The suspension has generated widespread reactions across social media, with many residents applauding the governor's oversight and calling for similar inspections of other hospital renovation projects across Jigawa State. Some commentators specifically urged him to inspect the ongoing renovation at Gwaram Cottage Hospital, alleging poor-quality work there as well.
This is not the first time Governor Namadi has taken action against poorly executed projects. In March 2025, he ordered the rework of the state's N10.8 billion Gully Erosion Control Project after raising concerns over the use of low-quality materials and the project's long-term durability.
