The Lebanese Minister of Education and Higher Education, Rima Karami, has accused the Israeli military of looting and demolishing three schools in southern Lebanon, describing the incident as another major blow to the country's education sector.
In a statement released on Friday through Lebanon's state-run National News Agency (NNA), Karami said Israeli forces allegedly removed items from the schools before using explosives to destroy the buildings, leaving them in ruins.
The latest destruction brings the number of schools completely destroyed in southern Lebanon to at least 20, while more than 100 others have sustained damage during the conflict, according to Lebanese authorities and UNESCO.
UNESCO estimates that around 500,000 Lebanese children remain out of school because of the ongoing violence, warning that prolonged disruption to education could have lasting effects on children's learning and well-being.
Karami condemned the attacks, saying the destruction of schools is occurring despite international commitments to protect educational institutions during armed conflicts. She urged the international community to pressure Israel to halt attacks on schools and safeguard children's right to education.
According to Lebanese officials, Israeli military operations since the conflict escalated have killed more than 4,300 people, injured over 12,000 others, and displaced more than one million residents. The casualties reportedly include at least 250 children.
Meanwhile, Lebanon and Israel continue discussions under a U.S.-mediated framework agreement aimed at securing a phased Israeli withdrawal from occupied areas in southern Lebanon, although no timetable has been announced. Israel maintains that its military operations are directed against Hezbollah.
