Iran has warned Ukraine that it will respond to a deadly attack on an Iranian commercial vessel in the Caspian Sea, describing the incident as a serious violation of international law.
Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said the strike, which reportedly killed one sailor and injured several others, "cannot go unanswered." He also accused Israel of encouraging the attack in an effort to widen the regional conflict.
Ukraine said its forces targeted a Russian warship and vessels allegedly transporting military cargo linked to Iran. However, Tehran denied involvement in the Russia-Ukraine war, insisting that the attacked ship was a civilian commercial vessel.
Iran has summoned Ukraine's chargé d'affaires in Tehran to protest what it described as a hostile and criminal act. Senior Iranian lawmaker Ebrahim Azizi also warned that Ukraine should expect consequences, saying Iran would not ignore attacks on its interests.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy defended the operation, saying Ukrainian long-range strikes had successfully targeted military-related vessels in the Caspian Sea. He also accused Russia of providing Iran with intelligence support through satellite surveillance.
Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov expressed condolences over the death of the sailor during a call with Araghchi and reaffirmed support for diplomatic efforts aimed at reducing tensions in the Middle East.
