Student protesters in India have vowed to continue nationwide demonstrations despite a violent police crackdown that left more than 100 people injured during a march to Parliament in New Delhi.
Thousands of mostly young demonstrators took to the streets on Monday demanding the resignation of Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan over a series of entrance examination scandals, including leaked question papers and grading irregularities that have affected millions of students. The protests have also been fueled by reports that more than 20 students died by suicide after the exam controversies.
Police fired tear gas and used force to disperse protesters as they approached Parliament, leading to clashes that injured over 100 people. Authorities have since filed several criminal cases against demonstrators over alleged violence and vandalism.
Despite the crackdown, protest leaders from the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP), the group leading the movement, insisted they would not retreat.
"We will continue to resist and demand accountability. We will not back down until the education minister resigns," CJP leader Abhijeet Dipke told supporters gathered at Jantar Mantar, a traditional protest site in the capital.
The demonstrations gained further momentum after activist Sonam Wangchuk was removed from the protest camp by police and admitted to a government hospital, a move his supporters described as illegal detention. Wangchuk has since resumed his hunger strike following the police action.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi has yet to publicly address the protests, even as opposition leader Rahul Gandhi joined demonstrators in New Delhi and called for greater government accountability.
Political analysts say the movement reflects growing frustration among India's youth and could become a major challenge for the government if protests continue to spread.
Student leaders have vowed to organize more demonstrations in the coming days, saying they will continue their campaign until their demands are met.
