Germany has deported an Afghan national with no criminal record for the first time since the Taliban returned to power in 2021, Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt announced on Tuesday.
The man was deported after his asylum application was rejected and he had exhausted all legal options to remain in Germany.
According to officials, he had previously attempted to settle in another European country but was found to be residing there illegally. After being transferred back to Germany, authorities arranged his deportation to Afghanistan.
The Afghan man was among 31 Afghan nationals sent back by plane on Tuesday. The remaining 30 deportees had criminal convictions, while he was the only one without a criminal record.
Germany’s decision to resume deportations to Afghanistan remains controversial due to concerns over human rights conditions and the safety of returnees under Taliban rule.
Since Germany restarted deportations to Afghanistan in 2024, more than 200 people have been returned. Human rights groups have raised concerns, with Amnesty International reporting that at least one deportee was later killed after returning to Afghanistan.
The German government says deportations are carried out against individuals who no longer have legal permission to remain in the country.
