France, Spain Face New Heatwave Threat as Wildfires Continue to Spread

France and Spain are preparing for another intense heatwave that could worsen devastating wildfires already affecting parts of both countries.

Authorities say the spread of fires near major cities, including Bordeaux in France and Madrid in Spain, has slowed, but rising temperatures expected this week could fuel existing flames and trigger new outbreaks.

In southwestern France, nearly 4,000 people were evacuated from tourist areas around Lacanau in the Gironde region on Tuesday. The number of people forced to flee the area has now exceeded 250,000, making Gironde the country’s worst-hit region.

French firefighters warned that conditions remain dangerous as temperatures are expected to reach around 40°C (104°F) during the country’s fourth heatwave of the year.

Spain has also been heavily affected, with about 116,000 people evacuated since the wildfires began. While some residents have returned home, firefighters continue battling major blazes in central Spain, particularly in the provinces of Toledo and Ávila.

Around 800 square kilometres of land have already been destroyed by the fires. Spanish officials said progress has been made in controlling the situation, but warned that the incoming heatwave could create further challenges.

Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez described the wildfires as a “painful expression” of the climate crisis, saying the extreme weather highlights the growing impact of climate change.

Authorities in both countries are urging residents to remain cautious as firefighters continue efforts to contain the flames amid worsening heat conditions.
