Four suspects arrested in connection with the killing of a University of Jos (UNIJOS) Political Science student, Ibrahim Mabaye, have confessed to their roles in the fatal assault, claiming they attacked him over the alleged theft of a mobile phone.
The suspects made the confessions while being paraded by the Plateau State Police Command following the incident, which occurred on Sunday at an off-campus apartment behind the City of David area along Ring Road in Jos North Local Government Area.
The killing has sparked widespread outrage after a viral video showed the victim being brutally beaten with planks and canes before he died from the injuries.
One of the suspects, Emmanuel Newyear, admitted that he took part in assaulting the deceased. He said his cousin informed him that a phone had gone missing and accused Mabaye of taking it. According to him, they questioned the victim and searched locations where he claimed the phone had been hidden but failed to recover it.
Newyear said he slapped Mabaye before striking him three times with a wooden plank in an attempt to force him to reveal the phone's whereabouts.
Another suspect, Teslor Joshua, confessed that he helped restrain the victim while others tied him with a rope during the assault.
The owner of the missing phone, Rinji Daniel, told police that Mabaye had spent the night in his room after they returned from an event. He said the victim later stepped outside to answer a phone call but never returned. When he woke up hours later, he discovered that his phone and his brother's power bank were missing.
Daniel said repeated calls to his phone went unanswered until Mabaye briefly picked up one call before disconnecting it. He then informed his relatives, leading to the confrontation that ended in the student's death.
Police said investigations are ongoing, while the suspects are expected to face prosecution over the incident.
