Hundreds of former Israeli military, intelligence, diplomatic, and police officials have called on U.S. President Donald Trump to pressure Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to take decisive action against escalating settler violence in the occupied West Bank.
In a letter signed by nearly 600 retired officials from the group Commanders for Israel’s Security (CIS), the former security leaders warned that the growing wave of attacks by Israeli settlers poses a serious threat to Israel’s security, U.S. interests, and regional stability.
The group urged Trump to raise the issue during his meeting with Netanyahu in Washington, arguing that only the U.S. president has the influence needed to prevent further escalation.
According to the letter, increasing violence by extremist settlers could have severe consequences if left unchecked. The signatories also accused some members of the Israeli government of enabling the violence by shielding settlers from legal accountability.
The appeal follows a weekend of deadly clashes and settler attacks across the occupied West Bank after a shooting incident in the town of Tal that left two Israelis and four Palestinians dead.
Netanyahu is visiting Washington for talks with Trump, where regional security, including tensions involving Iran and the situation in the occupied Palestinian territories, is expected to be high on the agenda.
