The Federal Government has called for an immediate and transparent investigation into the killing of a Nigerian citizen, Ibeh Chika Simon, during a South African Police Service operation in Bellville, Cape Town.
In a statement issued by the Nigerian Consulate General in Johannesburg, officials condemned the circumstances surrounding Simon's death and described the incident as deeply disturbing. The Consulate also confirmed that another Nigerian, Egwabor Patrick Chuks, was seriously injured during the operation and is currently receiving medical treatment.
According to the Nigerian mission, the incident raises fresh concerns over alleged police misconduct and the safety of foreign nationals in South Africa. It stressed that while Nigerians living in the country are expected to obey the law, no suspected offence should result in unlawful killings or excessive use of force.
The Consulate urged South African authorities to conduct a thorough, impartial investigation and ensure that anyone found responsible is brought to justice. It also appealed to Nigerians in South Africa to remain calm and pursue justice through legal and diplomatic channels.
The Federal Government extended its condolences to the family of the deceased and wished the injured victim a speedy recovery.
The latest incident follows the reported killings of two other Nigerians in South Africa in recent weeks, fueling renewed concerns over attacks on foreign nationals. Nigerian authorities have continued to condemn such incidents and pledged to seek justice and accountability through diplomatic engagement.
