The Federal Workers Forum (FWF) has called on the Federal Government to approve a new national minimum wage of ₦300,000 and immediately pay all outstanding salary-related arrears owed to federal workers.
In a statement issued in Abuja, the forum's National Coordinator, Andrew Emelieze, urged the government to settle the outstanding two-month wage award, clear the arrears of the 40 percent peculiar allowance, and complete the implementation of the ₦70,000 minimum wage.
Emelieze said workers' current salaries are no longer enough to cope with the rising cost of living, calling on President Bola Tinubu to urgently review public sector wages. He proposed a minimum wage of ₦300,000 and a maximum salary of ₦1.5 million for officers on Grade Level 17.
The forum also raised concerns over the welfare of correctional officers, alleging that many are forced to buy official uniforms, boots, belts, rank badges, and other work kits with their own money. It further called for an independent investigation into alleged extortion during promotion examinations in the Nigerian Correctional Service and the Federal Fire Service.
In addition, the FWF expressed concern over poor conditions in correctional centres nationwide, citing overcrowding, inadequate feeding, disease outbreaks, and the prolonged detention of awaiting-trial inmates.
The group urged the Federal Government to decongest prisons by granting amnesty to inmates who have spent more than five years awaiting trial and called for faster judicial processes to ensure no suspect remains in detention for more than one year without the conclusion of trial.
According to the forum, improving workers' welfare and reforming the correctional system are essential steps toward promoting dignity, justice, and better public service delivery in Nigeria.
