The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has returned ₦24 million recovered during an investigation into the alleged fraudulent sale of shares to former Senator Alaba Obende.
The funds were presented to the former lawmaker by the EFCC's Lagos Zonal Directorate 2 on Thursday in three bank drafts issued by Access Bank.
According to the anti-graft agency, the recovery followed a petition filed in January 2020 alleging conspiracy and fraudulent share transactions involving Coronation Securities Limited. The commission, however, did not disclose further details about the alleged fraud or how the funds were recovered.
Speaking during the handover, Acting Zonal Director Bawa Kaltungo reaffirmed the EFCC's commitment to ensuring victims of financial crimes recover their stolen assets while those responsible are brought to justice.
The handover is part of the commission's ongoing asset recovery efforts. Earlier, the EFCC returned ₦108 million recovered from an alleged fraud involving former employees of Greenwich Planet Sun King Nigeria Limited and continues to pursue suspects linked to financial crimes.
The commission has also recorded other major recoveries, including the final forfeiture of 52 housing units in Lekki, Lagos, ordered by a Federal High Court after the properties were found to be proceeds of unlawful activities.
