The Governor of Edo State, Monday Okpebholo, has announced a ₦41 million support package for 41 Edo indigenes evacuated from South Africa following recent xenophobic attacks.
Speaking while receiving the returnees at the Government House in Benin City on Monday, the governor said each person would receive ₦1 million within 24 hours to help secure accommodation and begin rebuilding their lives. He also pledged to provide soft loans for those interested in starting businesses.
Okpebholo said the intervention is part of the state's commitment to helping its citizens recover after losing their homes, businesses, and other valuables during the attacks.
He encouraged the returnees to focus on the future, noting that their lives were more valuable than the property they had lost.
"There is no place better than home. Edo is peaceful and safe, and our government will continue to stand by its people wherever they may be," the governor said.
He also highlighted Nigeria's long-standing relationship with South Africa, stressing that despite the unfortunate incidents, Nigeria would continue to promote peace and cooperation.
Speaking on behalf of the returnees, Riches Unubun expressed appreciation to both the Edo State Government and the Federal Government for facilitating their evacuation and providing support. He also praised the governor's commitment to assisting those affected.
The Director-General of the Edo State Migration Agency, Lucky Agazuma, commended the governor for his swift response and continued support for Edo citizens facing hardship abroad.
