Indonesia is facing a worsening drought as the El Niño-driven dry season continues to reduce rainfall across much of the country, threatening water supplies and agriculture.
Authorities say thousands of households in several provinces have been left without reliable access to clean drinking water after weeks of little or no rainfall. The country's National Agency for Disaster Management (BNPB) has urged local governments to strengthen emergency response measures and prepare for worsening conditions.
More than 7,100 households have been affected in hard-hit areas, including parts of Central Java, West Java, Yogyakarta, and Maluku, where emergency water distribution efforts are already underway.
BNPB spokesperson Abdul Muhari called on regional authorities and residents to remain vigilant against the growing risks of drought, water shortages, and forest and land fires.
Indonesia's Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysical Agency (BMKG) has warned that this year's dry season could be particularly severe as El Niño strengthens, increasing the likelihood of prolonged drought and reduced agricultural production.
According to BMKG, nearly half of Indonesia's climate zones had entered the dry season by early July, with below-average rainfall recorded in most regions. The agency expects the dry season to peak between July and September, with below-normal rainfall forecast across more than 80 percent of the country.
