The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Port Harcourt Area I Command, has handed over a consignment of expired pharmaceutical products valued at over ₦59 million to the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC).
The handover ceremony took place on Wednesday at the command’s headquarters in Port Harcourt and was attended by representatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), the Department of State Services (DSS), other security agencies, freight forwarders, and industry stakeholders.
Speaking during the event, the Customs Area Controller, Comptroller Salamatu Atuluku, said the seizure highlights the command’s commitment to preventing harmful and expired medicines from entering the Nigerian market.
According to her, the expired drugs were intercepted during a joint cargo inspection carried out by Customs officers in collaboration with NAFDAC and other government agencies.
She stated that the seized consignment, with a Cost, Insurance and Freight (CIF) value exceeding ₦59 million, could have posed serious health risks if it had reached consumers.
Atuluku also commended the Comptroller-General of Customs, Bashir Adeniyi, for promoting intelligence-driven operations and strengthening collaboration among government agencies.
Receiving the intercepted products on behalf of NAFDAC, the agency’s Deputy Director of the Port Inspection Directorate, Pharm. Adepoju Raufu, praised the Customs Service for stopping the expired medicines from entering Nigeria’s pharmaceutical supply chain.
He assured that NAFDAC would begin the necessary regulatory procedures to safely dispose of the expired drugs in line with existing laws and public health guidelines.
